From Victory to Vineyard: Pieter-Steph du Toit’s Journey from Rugby Glory to Winemaking Heritage
When you think of Pieter-Steph du Toit, the image that comes to mind is of a Springbok rugby legend, celebrated for his strength, determination, and leadership on the field. But beyond the stadium lights, Pieter-Steph is deeply rooted in another passion—the vineyards of Swartland, where his family’s legacy of farming and winemaking began generations ago.
Welcome to Kloovenburg Wine and Olive Estate, where heritage and craftsmanship come together to create exceptional wines now available at Springbok Foods.
A Legacy Built on Tradition and Passion
In 1956, the du Toit family took over the Kloovenburg Estate, setting out to build one of Swartland’s most respected wine and olive producers. Their vision was simple yet ambitious: combine tradition with pioneering spirit to produce wines of excellence.
By 1997, that dream took its first tangible step when Pieter du Toit (Pieter-Steph’s father), his sons, and friends created their very first wine—a Pinotage—under the most humble circumstances.
The Cellar Story: Where It All Began
With no modern winemaking equipment, the du Toits crafted that first vintage by hand. They removed berries from the stems by hand and stomped the grapes with their feet to break the skins. The juice was then transferred to Stellenbosch University, where it was inoculated, fermented, and matured.
The result? 200 bottles of unfiltered, hand-bottled Pinotage—a labor of love and the beginning of something extraordinary.
In 1998, the family produced 10 tons of Shiraz and 10 tons of Pinotage at another facility, marking the first wines officially released under the Kloovenburg label. By 2000, Pieter built his own cellar with a capacity of 200 tons, cementing Kloovenburg’s place among Swartland’s elite wineries.
From Rugby Fields to Vineyards
Today, Pieter-Steph and his brother Johan, both professional rugby players, carry the same values of dedication and perseverance from the field into the family’s farming and winemaking traditions. These wines are more than just bottles—they’re stories of heritage, passion, and craftsmanship.
